Why a Sphere residency makes sense for Mayer in 2027

Mayer is no stranger to the venue. He played 48 shows at Sphere with Dead & Company across their 2024 and 2025 residencies — and served as creative director of that production, spending roughly six months on the immersive visuals with Treatment Studio and Industrial Light & Magic. Returning to Sphere under his own name is a natural next step.

The three-format concept has deep roots in his catalog. Mayer used the same solo/Trio/full-band structure on his 2008 concert film Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles, and his announcement caption — "Meet me where the light is" — nods directly to it. The Trio reunion is the headline for longtime fans: Mayer, Jordan and Palladino released the live album Try! in 2005 and last played his own major concerts together on the 2017 Search for Everything Tour.

Timing fits as well. His most recent studio album, Sob Rock, came out in 2021, and Mayer has said he is deep into work on his first album since — and his first as an independent artist after parting ways with Columbia Records. A signature residency gives him a stage worthy of whatever comes next.
